Storylines

USWNT: The team is coming off one of their worst performances in recent history after losing their opening group match against Sweden. They U.S. women were absolutely pummeled 3-0, a result that seemed from both questionable individual performances and an overall poor showing from the team. The squad has been in in Japan for nearly two weeks after a lengthy preparation for the postponed Tokyo games, and were heavy favorites ahead of the Summer Games to win gold. Despite the rough outing, the roster is still the top ranked team in the world, and should bounce back against a New Zealand side that hasn’t spent much time together on the international stage during the last 18 months. After the loss against Sweden, look for potential player rotation and adjustments from head coach Vlatko Andonovski due to the quick turn around between group games.

New Zealand: The Football Ferns are coming off an opening group game loss against their Oceanic rivals Australia where they were defeated 2-1. The team has had little preparation ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, but could take a small silver lining from the previous game where they managed to steal a goal back late in stoppage time thanks to 20-year-old Gabi Rennie. The young prospect was subbed on late into the game and scored two minutes into her time on the field. Head coach, and former USWNT boss, Tom Sermani is likely to still rely on his more experienced players, including defenders Abby Erceg and Ali Riley who both play in the U.S. in the NWSL.

USWNT vs. New Zealand prediction

USWNT have historically played well against the ferns and except this to be no different. Pick: USWNT 3, New Zealand 0.
