The U.S. women’s national team will face off against the Netherlands in Olympic quarterfinals on Friday at International Stadium Yokohama in Japan. The meeting marks a rematch of the 2019 Women’s World Cup final, where the USWNT went on to win 2-0 in Lyon, France, to capture their fourth World Cup title. This will be the third time the World Cup finalists have met in the knockout rounds of the subsequent Olympics and the second occasion specifically involving the USWNT. Team USA has reached the quarterfinals seven consecutive times, thought were eliminated from Olympic medal contention during the quarterfinals in the 2016 Rio Games.

Storylines

USWNT: The team advanced out of their group with 1-1-1 record, securing a second-place finish on the final matchday with a 0-0 draw against Australia. The United States now face Netherlands, a team that has scored in every group match this Olympics, and has set an Olympic record for most goals in group play with 21 goal. Head coach Vlatko Andonovski has rotates the squad up to this point, though the performances have left some lingering questions around tactics and the general attack in front of goal. The team will need a big game from the midfield and the defensive line in order to ensure a win against a high-scoring Netherlands side.

Netherlands: The Dutch have produced highlight reels on top of highlight reels in their first-ever Olympic campaign, setting the record for most Olympic goals in a group stage thanks to their star striker Vivianne Miedema. Miedema currently leads the Olympics for most goals (8) in the completion, while Netherlands teammate Lieke Martens is among the top three with four goals. The team had lopsided wins over China and fellow Olympic debutants Zambia, but had to come from behind against Brazil — the No. 7 ranked team in the world. Despite Team USA’s second-place finish in the group, they are a team that the Netherlands has struggled against. Netherlands lost the 2019 final, and recently lost an international friendly back in November. The Dutch will need to be more than Miedema scoring goals to advance.

Prediction

The two sides will put together another instant classic in a tightly contested match, but USWNT squeak through a victory on a late goal. Pick: USWNT 2, Netherlands 1.
