The 2020 summer Olympics are on the horizon after being rescheduled in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The summer tournament will be held in Tokyo, Japan and groups have been drawn for Olympic soccer competitions. The United States women’s national team were drawn into a group of death G with old rivals Sweden as well as Australia, and New Zealand.

The 2016 gold medalists, Germany, will miss out on the Olympics after failing to qualify via their early 2019 World Cup exit. France were eliminated in 2019 World Cup quarterfinals and also missed the cut. Europe will be represented by the Netherlands, 2019 World Cup runner-ups, and Great Britain.

A rapid development in roster selection ahead of the summer games occurred after concerns over this year’s Olympics being held amidst an on-going pandemic. In previous Olympics, national teams were allowed to select an 18 player roster with four alternates who could only be called on as a replacement for injured players, with replaced players no longer eligible to participate in the tournament.

For Tokyo, the International Olympic Committee has adjusted the rule to allow national teams 22 players on their squads for the Tokyo Olympics but will still be limited to 18-player team sheets (11 starters plus seven substitutes) on matchdays. Netherlands manager Sarina Wiegman made the initial push for expanded roster, working with FIFA for support to appeal to the IOC.

The rule adjustment is a welcomed one for all teams, with the USWNT now converting goalkeeper Jane Campbell, defender Casey Krueger, midfielder Catarina Macario and forward Lynn Williams from alternates to part of the full roster as they’re now eligible to participate in games.
