Harry Kane returned to action with Tottenham for the first time this season, playing 18 minutes of a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wadnerers on Sunday as speculation over his future continues to swirl. Kane, who wants to leave Tottenham and join Manchester City, did not feature in the victory over Pep Guardiola’s side nor the opening UEFA Europa Conference League game away to Pacos de Ferreira, a 1-0 loss in Portugal.

Without Kane, Spurs manger Nuno Espirito Santo named the same side that beat Manchester City with Heung min Son leading the line and the likes of Dele Alli, Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn in support and was rewarded with the same result once more, Dele scoring a first half penalty that ensures Spurs are one of just three teams who have so far won both of their opening games of the season.

Upon arrival at Molineux, Kane was greeted with boos by Wolverhampton supporters, a reflection of the antipathy that some feel toward the 28-year-old for the way in which he has attempted to engineer a move away from Tottenham. That was not a view that was necessarily shared by traveling Spurs fans, who serenaded their star striker with their customary chant of “he’s one of our own”.

For how much longer is still not clear. The England captain reported back to the club’s Hotspur Way training ground just a week before the domestic season was due to begin, something he insisted had always been the plan despite indications to the contrary.

Kane — who had a shot saved and picked up a yellow card in his 18 minutes — believes he has a gentleman’s agreement with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy dating back to last summer and is ready to move on to compete for the silverware that has so far eluded him during his career. Manchester City have so far made one bid for the striker so far, a £100 million offer that was swiftly rejected by Tottenha,.

Nuno, who beat his former club on Sunday, has consistently looked to avoid discussion over Kane’s future, and said in his pre-match press conference on Friday: “He trained today. He trained good. He will train tomorrow [Saturday] and tomorrow we will make a decision.”

“I’m so sorry to keep saying the same things but this is how we work. It’s a day by day situation.”
