Champions League: Cristiano Ronaldo vs. Lionel Messi? Rivalry may be renewed with PSG, Man City in same group

The UEFA Champions League group stage draw has taken place with some huge clashes on the schedule this fall. Bayern Munich-Barcelona, Real Madrid-Inter Milan and PSG-Man City (with the possibility of Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo) are all on the UCL group stage slate. You can find the full draw results here.

Group D is a rematch from last campaign with Spaniards Real Madrid and Italian kings Inter Milan going head-to-head once more. Shakhtar Donetsk improbably also being re-drawn with the two giants and Sheriff Tiraspol of Moldova making their debut.

In Group E, there are German champions Bayern Munich against Spanish giants Barcelona — both eliminated by PSG last time out — and Benfica add a splash of European tradition with Dynamo Kyiv the fourth team in there.

Titleholders Chelsea are up against Juventus in Group H with Zenit Saint Petersburg and Malmo FF of Sweden rounding out the group. There is also a rematch of last term’s UEFA Europa League final with Manchester United landing in Villarreal CF’s Group F alongside Atalanta BC who have reached the previous two knockout phases and Young Boys of Switzerland.

But most eyes will be on Group A, and the potential of a brand-new chapter in one of the sport’s best rivalries.

In Group A, Manchester City will renew their rivalry with PSG after beating the French giants en route to last season’s final. But the two group-stage matchups also could serve as the latest installment of Messi vs. Ronaldo. Messi landed with PSG earlier this month and is set to make his club debut this weekend. Ronaldo, meanwhile, is currently in the middle of a maelstrom of rumors linking him with a move from Juventus back to the Premier League with Manchester City (follow the latest Ronaldo rumors here).

Ronaldo and Messi squared off in the group stage last season as Juventus and Barcelona were in the same group. Ronaldo missed the first meeting, but scored two goals against Barca and Messi in a 3-0 win on Matchday 6.
