South Australian Liberal MP Nicolle Flint stripped down to a garbage bag after ‘sexist’ comments

A Liberal MP has stripped off to just a garbage bag to make a point about what she called a ‘sexist’ attack from an ABC radio host.

South Australian Liberal MP Nicolle Flint shared a video of herself responding to comments made by ABC presenter and Sunday Mail columnist Peter Goers.

Mr Goers made comments regarding Ms Flint’s clothing after receiving a copy of a newsletter she sent out to her constituents.

He wrote in the paper: ‘Nicolle wears pearl earrings and a pearly smile. She favours a vast wardrobe of blazers, coats and tight, black, ankle-freezing trousers and stiletto heels.

‘She presents herself in her own newsletter, 23 times as a fashion plate. She has blazers and coats in black, blue, pink, red, beige, green, white, cream, floral and two in grey.’

Ms Flint released a video on Monday hitting back at Mr Goers for his comments.

In the video, filmed in her office, she held up a copy of the newspaper while wearing an overcoat, trousers and black heels as she explained she had put up with a lot being a female politician.

‘Police charged a creepy old man with stalking me. My campaign office was vandalised calling me a skank and a prostitute who charges $60 an hour,’ she said.

‘When I appeared on Q&A former journalist Mike Carlton live-tweeted that singer Jimmy Barnes showed great restraint by not leaping from his seat and strangling me.

‘The yesterday Sunday Mail columnist and ABC radio journalist Peter Goers criticised the way I look.’

Ms Flint then talked through the criticism Mr Goers made about her outfit before asking what a female politician should wear.

She then stripped off her jacket to reveal she was wearing a garbage bag accessorised with a belt.

‘How about a garbage bag to match your rubbish views,’ she asked.

Several politicians came out in support of Ms Flint’s response.

Greens politician Sarah Hanson-Young may be an ideological opponent of Sen. Flint, but supported her on this issue.

‘Good on Nicolle Flint for standing up and calling out the constant sexism dished out to women in politics,’ Sen. Hanson-Young tweeted.

‘Doesn’t matter what side you are on, no woman should have to put up with sexism in the workplace.’

MP Jason Falinski also supported Ms Flint. He tweeted: ‘This kind of behaviour absolutely needs to be called out. Very well said Nicolle Flint, we’re right there with you.’

However some social media users said Ms Flint ‘deserved’ the criticism she had received.

Jordan Shanks, the comedian behind FriendlyJordies, tweeted: ‘You don’t get to moralise about men being mean to you if you spend your entire career attempting to destroy marine parks and conservation laws.

‘Nicolle Flint causes extinctions – she deserves every bit of criticism she gets.’

Ms Flint was elected to the southern Adelaide seat of Boothby, which has been in Liberal hands since the 1950s, in the 2016 federal election.

The 42-year-old was one of three South Australian Liberals who voted for Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton to take over the leadership of the party at the 2018 spill that ousted Malcolm Turnbull.

Ms Flint has also argued against the conversation of marine areas in South Australia,

In 2014, before being elected, she penned a letter to The Advertiser against marine park sanctuary zones, which shut off fishing in areas such as Kangaroo Island.

‘This will hurt professional fishermen, tour operators, recreational fishers and businesses in coastal towns, not to mention exports and the state economy,’ she wrote at the time.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Peter Goers for comment.
