Ellie Goulding Is Pregnant, Expecting Her First Child With Husband Caspar Jopling

Goulding’s upcoming project, her wellness book Fitter. Calmer. Stronger. that she’ll be releasing in September 2021, focuses on exercise and bodily movement improving the quality of one’s life. But the “Love Me Like You Do” singer said her first trimester had other plans.

“I actually went from being smug about how healthy my salads were and my breakfasts and eating nuts and seeds, and then all I wanted was McDonald’s,” she said with a laugh. “And I was kind of terrified, I suddenly wanted all of the bad things! Whatever this baby did when it took over my body was like, Hell no — I do not want broccoli, spinach, collards! I just wanted sugar and carbs.”

The topsy-turviness of her game plan was only prodded that much more by the ongoing pandemic, a time she never would’ve though she’d be expecting her firstborn. Goulding said her particularly “solitary journey” led her to be very secretive and protective. She opted out of the over-the-top gender reveal moments because she was more concerned about having a healthy baby. The other things she’s checking off her to-do list before the baby arrives, such as arranging the nursery, will happen on their own time.

“You have your partner, and you have your friends, but in a pandemic, it can feel particularly lonely. Because it wasn’t something I had planned for right now, [and] I knew it was a more solitary journey because of what’s going on. I think that made me keep it very secretive and made me very protective over it,” Goulding explained. “I’ve been able to deal with it by being kind to myself, accepting myself bad or good, and taking it day by day.”

It hasn’t been a year since she released her last studio effort, Brightest Blue, which went No. 1 on The Official U.K. Albums chart last July. But she’s already been hunkered down in the studio putting in the work for what’s to come next.

“I can’t wait to go back on tour. I’ve been in the studio most days, [and] I’m excited for the challenge. It will be a totally new experience.”
