Miami Marlins pitching prospect Edwards Cabrera is getting called up to the big leagues. On Sunday, Cabrera, one of the top players in Miami’s farm system, got emotional when he was told that he was receiving the promotion.

Cabrera is slated to make his first career start against the Washington Nationals on Wednesday. The Marlins posted a video of the 23-year-old receiving the news.

According to MLB Pipeline, the right-handed pitcher is ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the Marlins’ system. Here’s what CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson wrote about Cabrera after last season:

Cabrera closed out the 2019 season with a strong nine-start run at Double-A, suggesting he has a chance to make his big-league debut this upcoming year. He has a starter’s frame as well as enough arm strength to pitch into the upper-90s and a developing breaking ball. Cabrera should be able to stick as a mid-rotation starter at his maturation.

Back in 2015, Cabrera signed with the Marlins as an international free agent. The 2019 season really helped Cabrera rise in the rankings as he went 9-4 with a 2.23 ERA and 116 strikeouts in time between the Single-A Jupiter Hammerheads and Triple-A Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. Cabrera suffered a shoulder injury in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season then missed all of spring training in 2021 as a result of a biceps injury.

In 2021, Cabrera put together a 3-4 record to go along with a 2.93 ERA and 92 strikeouts across three minor-league levels. Opponents are hitting just .205 against the young right-hander.

Getting the call to the major leagues is always a special moment and it’s always great to see that wholesome reaction when a dream is realized.
