Why Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Didn’t Need to Tell the Royal Family About Their Oprah Interview

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will do their first sit-down interview since stepping back from their senior royal family roles with Oprah Winfrey. The two retain their titles, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but just because they still have some ties to the monarchy doesn’t mean they needed to get the Queen’s permission to speak to Oprah candidly about their experiences in the institution.

A royal source explained to Entertainment Tonight that “the Duke and Duchess are no longer working members of the royal family and therefore any decisions they take with regard to media commitments are matters for them. As non-working members of the royal family, they are under no obligation to inform the royal household of such plans.”

It is not known at this point whether Meghan and Harry let the royal family know in advance that they had agreed to a sit-down interview with Oprah.

The 90-minute interview, airing on CBS on Sunday, March 7 at 8 PM ET, will be a “wide-ranging” conversation, “covering everything from stepping into life as a royal, marriage, motherhood [and] philanthropic work, to how she [Meghan] is handling life under intense public pressure,” according to CBS’ statement.

Deadline reports that Meghan and Oprah will speak first, and Harry will join during the later part of the interview. Harry and Meghan together will “speak about their move to the United States and their future hopes and dreams for their expanding family,” Deadline wrote.

Meghan and Harry just announced they are expecting their second child on Valentine’s Day through their spokesperson. “We can confirm that Archie is going to be a big brother. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to be expecting their second child,” their spokesperson said. The couple has not revealed when Meghan is due with their second baby yet.
