A Scottish gin using botanicals from the banks of the Clyde river has been launched by a wedding filmmaker turned spirits entrepreneur.

Shipyard Gin was founded by Andy Samuel during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown after business at his existing company dropped off following the introduction of restrictions to wedding events. The expression is a citrus-forward London Dry gin with botanicals including gorse, elderflower and heather.

According to Samuel, the botanicals are all ingredients that can be collected alongside the Clyde, which flows past his home town of Inverclyde.

“I’m Inverclyde born and bred and have always had a fascination with the shipyards,” Samuel said. “When we were younger, we used to go out with my grandpa to pick berries. These are now the botanicals we’re putting into the gin.”

Samuel’s Shipyard Gin company is based at the old municipal buildings in Gourock on the west coast of Scotland.

Earlier this month, Pernod Ricard released a new Plymouth Gin bottle that is free from single-use plastic and weighs 15% less.
