Searching for a job always requires a well-planned strategy. In this era of Covid-19, however, you will face unique challenges. Many businesses are scaling back operations. In-person interviews may not be possible for the foreseeable future. You need to be extra diligent and creative to find a job under these conditions. Let’s explore some guidelines for setting goals so you can find a great job during these trying times.

Focus on industries that are hiring.

There has been quite a bit of focus on businesses closing and people out of work since the Covid-19 situation began last year. However, the news isn’t all bleak. While certain industries are postponing or cutting back on hiring, others are actively hiring. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports, for example, that there were 6.6 million job openings as of the end of December 2020. In general, companies in sectors such as transportation, deliveries, communications technology and online learning are booming.

Develop an online networking strategy.

Online networking on social media and video communication tools such as Skype and Zoom have been growing for years, long before the pandemic. In fact, the internet is often the most efficient way to conduct job searches even during normal times. When it’s difficult to travel and meet people in person, however, it’s even more important to build your online presence and make sure you have the skills and tools you need.

• Optimize your presence on LinkedIn. This is the time to strengthen your profile on LinkedIn and make sure you’ve included essential elements such as a professional photo and a thorough keyword-rich description. Another tip that can differentiate you from other candidates is to create a video intro for your job listing.

• Expand your network. It’s always a good policy to build your connections on social media sites. Joining groups on Facebook and LinkedIn can help you connect with more like-minded people, including potential employers. You can also join relevant chats and webinars.

• Have the right online networking tools. It’s easy to set up accounts with online audio and video services. It’s best to get as many of these apps as possible and familiarize yourself with how they work so you’re ready for any interviews that come up. These include Skype, FaceTime, GoToMeeting and Webex.

Consider temporary employment.

Many of the jobs currently available, including those from Amazon, are temporary or seasonal. Many people don’t like to consider jobs that aren’t in line with their career objectives. However, temporary employment can be useful as you continue to pursue your long-term goals. There are several benefits to temporary jobs:

• They provide you with needed cash.

• You can search for your dream job while working in a short-term position. It’s better to do this while you have the cushion of a regular paycheck.

• You can learn valuable skills. Temporary jobs give you a chance to learn skills you can put on your resume.

• You will gain networking opportunities. You never know who you’ll meet while working at a temp job. A short-term gig can also lead to a permanent position. If an employer likes you, they may decide to take you on full time.

Acquire new skills.

Whether you’re currently unemployed or you have a temporary job or a full-time job that you’re not satisfied with, this is an excellent time to focus on adding to your skills and qualifications. One of the simplest ways to do this is to take online courses. Many companies and educational institutions are currently offering free or low-cost online classes on all kinds of subjects, including programming, online security, marketing and finance. This can be a good way to build your skill set and strengthen your resume.

Create your own job hunting plan.

It may not be easy to find a job right now, but it’s definitely possible. Create a custom plan based on your goals and skills. Focus on what is possible right now, such as applying for jobs in industries that are currently hiring. At the same time, boost your networking efforts, and think about new skills you can add to your toolbox.
