Council Post: 10 Ways To Live A Healthier Lifestyle As An Entrepreneur

Business leaders have a lot of responsibilities to juggle, which often lead to non-stop workdays and sleepless nights. The overwork culture naturally drives entrepreneurs to burn out, whether in the short or long term. 

Thankfully, there are some simple, yet powerful changes that business leaders can make in their daily routines to live healthier and more successful lives. Here, 10 members of Young Entrepreneur Council share their best advice on how to stay strong and motivated without losing momentum. 

1. Make Time For Exercise

I used to say, “I’m too busy to exercise,” but I didn’t appreciate the impact exercise has on energy, focus and productivity. You can’t create more time each day, but with a clean diet and exercise, you can create more energy and mental focus. Today, I’d say I can’t afford not to exercise, and I start nearly every day with a strenuous 90-minute hike or mountain bike ride. – Ben Landers, Blue Corona

2. Create An Intentional Morning Routine

Start by changing what you do in the morning. What you do in the morning translates into the rest of your day. This is especially true for entrepreneurs because as a business leader you want to bring your best foot forward each day. As such, it is crucial to make sure you start your day on the right note. Everyone has different personal habits that help them achieve success, and you need to identify what those are for you. Once you do, you can build your morning routine around these habits. It may mean meditating and then working out, or reading a book and sipping coffee. Whatever it is, make sure it’s something that is sustainable for you to do on a daily basis. 3. Consider Talking To A Therapist

Therapy is a powerful way to help yourself, especially as an entrepreneur. Being in this position, there aren’t many people you can talk to about your difficulties or problems, so having a therapist who you can speak to and who is totally outside your business can take a huge weight off your shoulders. Leaders are oftentimes forced to “figure it out” or “put on a brave face” when their business is having problems or growing quickly. This kind of stress builds up and can affect your leadership in the business. When you can let all of those built-up feelings out, you will be happier and a better leader. It will also prevent you from venting to a partner or employee and causing problems to your company morale. 4. Carve Out Time For Connection

I believe that healthy habits are imperative to a successful career. The best habit I have set in place is to regularly sit down to a home-cooked meal as a family. At 5:30 every evening, I turn off my laptop and join my husband in the kitchen, where we share our days and make a healthy, delicious meal together. You need real food to fuel and power your body, and you need meaningful time with your family to fuel and power your spirit. As entrepreneurs, it is difficult for us to separate ourselves from our work, and even more difficult to set boundaries around our working hours. Carving out time for connection will leave you rejuvenated and re-energized, which will allow you to engage in both your personal and professional life more successfully. – Ashley Sharp, Dwell with Dignity

5. Prioritize Getting Enough Sleep

You cannot underestimate how important it is to get at least eight hours of sleep every night. When you avoid social media before going to bed and have uninterrupted sleep, you give your body and brain the rest it needs to function well. 6. Practice Mindfulness

One simple yet powerful change I’ve made to my lifestyle in order to live a healthier life as an entrepreneur is practicing mindfulness. One of the most important skills for a business leader is to be able to think strategically and make decisions calmly and deliberately. Mindfulness helps me do this. 7. Schedule Regular Time Off

One change I’ve made recently is taking one whole week off toward the end of every quarter. I use this time to recharge and take care of myself, which makes it easier to tackle the next quarter head-on. There may be circumstances where this isn’t possible, like if we are way behind on a time-sensitive project, but for the most part, I’m able to follow through with this plan and also encourage my team to take some time off when they need it. – John Brackett, Smash Balloon LLC

8. Spend Time Alone In Nature

Every day I make sure to get outside and move my body. I find I do some of my best thinking, brainstorming and troubleshooting while in nature with limited distractions. I find the silence to be refreshing and rejuvenating. On days where I need encouragement or I feel inspired about a specific topic, I may listen to an educational podcast. Setting aside that time for me away from my kids and staff has really allowed me to improve my workdays. – Leila Lewis, Be Inspired PR

9. Limit Screen Time After Work

As an entrepreneur, I try to limit my screen time after my working hours. This has helped me in several ways. Now, I not only have better focus, but I can sleep well too. As a result, my stress and anxiety levels have dropped and I can concentrate on my work better. Besides, I get to spend a lot of time doing things I really love, like spending time with my family or learning new skills to improve my efficiency. – Josh Kohlbach, Wholesale Suite

10. Let Others Be Leaders

I’ve learned to let other people lead. For years, I was the de facto leader of pretty much any project we had going on, but that just wasn’t sustainable. As a single individual, I couldn’t possibly oversee every product and initiative in our organization, especially not as we scaled up. So, I’ve assembled a team of fellow leaders around myself who can shoulder some of the responsibility for our continued success. I’ve even shuffled my title around a few times as we worked to find the best configuration of our leadership team. We often glamorize the solo aspect of entrepreneurship. The truth is you’re only limiting your own success and driving yourself to burn out if you cling to the idea that you have to bear sole responsibility for your venture’s success.
