Two TV gems are finally on HBO Max this weekend

HBO Max has plenty of blockbusters, but it’s also a treasure trove of off-the-beaten path TV shows and movies. This weekend it’s adding a couple more jewels to the collection. The Knick and Banshee, two of the best and least-seen series of the last decade are both heading to the service in the next week.

The Knick is a show about a hospital in the early 20th century. At the center of the series is Clive Owen (Children of Men, Inside Man) as a brilliant but troubled surgeon. While the show has phenomenal writing, what really sets it apart is that each of its 20 episodes is directed by the brilliant Steven Soderbergh, the director behind Ocean’s 11, Out of Sight, and Contagion. Thanks to Soderbergh the entire series is visually stunning and looks unlike anything else on TV.

Banshee is a crime series set in rural Pennsylvania. An ex-con, played by Antony Starr (The Boys), moves to the town and starts calling himself Lucas Hood, the name of the town’s new sheriff — who died before taking on his new job. With his new identity, Hood balances crime and keeping a tenuous kind of order in the small town. The series has all the flair of a 90s crime movie, complete with some brutal violence and the intrigue of a secretive crime boss who’s hunting down Hood.

The Knick will arrive on HBO Max on Saturday, Feb. 20, while Banshee will be available to subscribers on Tuesday, Feb. 23.
