The Ubisoft universe collides in Netflix’s Captain Laserhawk

Adi Shankar, the producer of Netflix’s Castlevania, is back with a new series that takes a Far Cry DLC to unrecognizable, prismatic places. The series is called Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, and, according to Shankar, draws inspiration from a number of Ubisoft titles. After the success of his “Bootleg Universe” fan films, Ubisoft gave the producer complete permission to remix the company’s IP — and Captain Laserhawk is the result. The show was technically announced back in 2019, but it wasn’t until this week’s Netflix Geeked Week event that we got a real idea of what it was about.

Captain Laserhawk takes place in an alternate-world future where automation became widespread in the 1950s, and a massive tech company, Eden, provides citizens of the world with a basic income in order to surveil and control the population. “Really, all the reasons this show is on Netflix and not Amazon,” Shankar joked. The show’s hero, the cybernetic super soldier Dolph Laserhawk, escaped from the Eden army, and hopes to pull off one last heist against his ex-employer before riding into the sunset with his boyfriend, Alex.

Aside from mashing up Ubisoft’s most famous franchises, Captain Laserhawk will nod to various moments in game and animation history. The style of the show’s animation seems to riff on everything from ’80s Saturday morning cartoons to video platforms of the era. The creative leads from animation studio Bobbypills said in a preview that they aimed to mimic the aesthetics of everything from the looks of Game Boy, PS1, and current-gen CG in the series.

Shankar has previously produced movies like The Grey and Dredd, but is best known for producing Castlevania, which recently ended its four-season run. Captain Laserhawk will be entirely created by Shankar, who serves as a producer and showrunner on the series.
