The new trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s Old is all about growing up … really quickly

M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming … age-related horror movie (?) Old has a new trailer, and it doesn’t make a whole lot more sense than the last one. But it does look creepy.

The trailer starts out with a husband (Gael García Bernal) and wife (Vicky Krieps) enjoying a nice day on a beautiful, secluded beach with their young kids and a few other people. However, after one person mysteriously dies and their body decomposes in just a few minutes, it becomes clear that this beach isn’t so lovely after all.

Suddenly, the family’s kids have gone from children to teenagers, played by Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit) and Alex Wolff (Hereditary), seemingly aging 10 or 15 years in just a few minutes. Then the beach — and the trailer — descends into panic, as everyone left tries to escape the strange time-warping beach.

Even if the trailer keeps things pretty mysterious, we do know a little bit more about it than other Shyamalan movies, since this one is loosely adapted from a graphic novel of the same name. In the graphic novel, written by Pierre Oscar Levy and illustrated by Frederik Peeters, the mysterious beach inflicts some kind of rapid aging on the family, and they experience their entire lives in the course of just one day.

Of course, this being a Shyamalan movie, it appears that something sinister and surprising is at play here, too. We see brief shots of spiders, bodies morphing, and some nefarious supernatural presence that seems be to locking everyone on the beach.

Old is Shyamalan’s first movie since 2019’s Glass, and his first non-sequel since The Visit in 2015. In the meantime, Shyamalan served as the executive producer on Servant, a TV series for Apple TV Plus.

Old is scheduled to be released only in theaters on July 23.
