Final Fantasy 14 gets a PS5 open beta on April 13

Final Fantasy 14 is finally getting a PlayStation 5 version, with an open beta starting on April 13.

Announced by Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda during the Final Fantasy 14 showcase on Friday, the PlayStation 5 version will include a high-resolution interface, faster load times, 4K resolution, and increased frame rates. If you have suffered waiting to load into the always crowded Limsa Lominsa, the speed boost from the PS5 version should have alleviate that. (It will not stop people from crowding in Limsa, though.)

On the PlayStation Blog, Square Enix notes that “new and veteran adventurers will be able to play the full experience,” but does not specify if players will be able to dive into the beta using the free trial, or whether it’s only open to paid subscribers. We’ve reached out to Square Enix to clarify.

Any player who purchased Final Fantasy 14 for PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade their copy to a PS5 version for free. Square Enix did the same thing when the game moved from PS3 to PS4. The team has yet to announce if or when the PS4 version will be sunset, but during the stream, producer Naoki Yoshida did acknowledge how hard it is to get a PS5. He encouraged fans to keep trying, during the Live Letter that aired shortly after.

Final Fantasy 14’s final Shadowbringers patch, 5.5, will launch on the same day. The next expansion, Endwalker, will be released in fall 2021.
